Huntington Beach police are investigating reports of vandalism after several campaign signs that have been tampered with, disrupting parents in the community.
Signs attempting to shake voters to oppose measures A and B related to the material shown in the Children’s section of the Public Library drew the anger of some parents after they appeared at several intersections near the neighborhood and school.
The sign reads, “Please protect your kids from porn. No to A&B.” The use of the word “porn,” they say, is an upsetting parent.
“It was frightening to see the words we were talking on almost every corner,” said Talyn Palumbo, a parent of four and six years old. “My son is a great time when he just learned to read. That means he will read everything. That means he will not be hiding from now on. That’s what we see every time we leave the house.”
By late Monday morning, some signs had been withdrawn, and others had the word “porn” been cut off from them. Police said one person was quoted for vandalism in connection with one case.
The campaign banner addresses two measures that have largely divided the books that Huntington Beach voters should be on public library shelves and who should control them. The city’s conservative city council and our children’s protection groups are behind the signs.
“Our public libraries have indecent material available to minors,” said Councillor Chad Williams. “It is said that all that is needed to triumph for evil is that good people do nothing. We are exposing what is happening in the darkness by shining light.”
Measurement A will abolish the Children’s Book Review Board. Measurement B requires voter approval for future efforts to privatize the city’s public library system. Proponents of the measures believe the enemy is trying to censor the library’s books.
Voters will be asked to vote on the issue during the special election in June.
