Conservative commentator Steve Hilton announced Tuesday that he will be in the 2026 race for the governor of California, running as a Republican, replacing Democrat Gavin Newsom.
Hilton, who held shows on Fox News for six years and worked as an advisor to former Prime Minister David Cameron, took responsibility for the state’s Democrats for launching a formal campaign in Huntington Beach due to the state’s well-known high taxes, rising home prices, and “destroying California’s dreams.”
He said he welcomes the candidacy by former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Senator and Attorney General. He said the governor’s job should “get this job for her identity, not her ability, but rather the comfort award given to machine politicians who have failed and rejected from Washington.”
Harris is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, and if she runs and wins, she will become the first elected governor in the United States.
Hilton also denounced the enormous scale of the Southern California wildfires in January regarding “democratic extremism and incompetence,” and denounced the “industrial complex” of party activists, unions and bureaucrats.
The cause of the fatal Palisade fire and Eton fire is under investigation. Both caught fire on January 7th during a strong Santa Ana wind in an area that had been bone-dry for eight months. The Palisade fire, the largest in the flame, destroyed more than 6,800 structures and killed at least 12 people. Eaton Fire destroyed more than 9,000 structures and killed 18 people.
Hilton did not specifically elaborate on his criticism of the Democrats. Democrat Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has expelled the fire chief amid a public crack over the preparation of a potential flame and a finger’s potential flame over responsibility for the attack between city hall and city hall. The water system used to combat the Palisade fire in Los Angeles has dried out under the demands of what turned out to be the most destructive fire in city history. Bass faces criticism of being abroad when the flames begin.
Many of the blame games that follow LA are centered around who knows what. Karma Dickerson and Annabelle Sedano report NBC4 News on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025 at 5pm.
His campaign, according to the statement, said Hilton will “strengthen positive and practical solutions in place of today’s ideology and doctrine,” and according to his campaign, his campaign was his campaign.
His campaign said Hilton’s “Positive Populism” brand will focus on helping working families.
Hilton will join the field crowded with prominent Democrats, including former US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Bekera and former US Rep. Katie Porter. A strong supporter of President Donald Trump, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, is another Republican in the race. If Harris decides to run, the race could be dramatically shaken up.
California operates the top two main systems where all candidates compete in one vote, regardless of party, with the two who received the most votes in the November general election.
Republicans have not won a statewide race in large California in nearly 20 years. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the last Republican to be elected governor in 2006.
