LA police warn gem burglars targeting elderly victims

The surge in distracted style jewelry theft targeting senior victims in Los Angeles held a press conference Tuesday, urging the public to warn about a surge in theft.

There are several types of these “distraction thefts” throughout the Southern California area, with two recent incidents in Manhattan Beach.

According to officials at the Los Angeles Police Department, crime usually occurs during the daytime hours of residential areas, involving an organized group of criminals.

Authorities say the victims were usually close to white thieves, perhaps Eastern Europe, generally male and female thieves, and in some cases even children.

Thieves are known to approach both on foot and on rental vehicles, and are prone to deflect victims by asking for directions, composing gems, and asking if they can pray together.

“Once engaged, they provide jewellery ‘gifts’, place fake gems around the victim’s neck, and steal real pieces at the same time,” officials told the community’s bulletin. “Many victims don’t know that their property was taken until the suspect leaves.”

The crime was detailed in the police station’s monthly crime report released last Friday, with at least 140 estimates of these distracting style thefts in LA this year.

Police will provide the following suggestions to help people stay safe:

Don’t avoid engaging with strangers approaching from within the vehicle. Report suspicious activity in residential areas, including unfamiliar vehicles, and, if possible, be aware of license plate numbers and suspicious descriptions if you become a victim.

Anyone with information about these types of crimes is advised to contact the LAPD Mission Area Robbery Detective at 818-838-9800. Those who want to remain anonymous can call it the LA Regional Crime Stopper Hotline at 800-222-8477.
