Chef Bruno Cerrato keeps a gift from Pope Francis close to his heart – NBC Los Angeles

The dream that Bruno Cerrato, a beloved Orange County humanitarian and restaurant owner, realized in 2018, continues to inspire him a few years later.

Serrato, a longtime owner of Anaheim’s White House Restaurant, met Pope Francis in the Vatican City about seven years ago. He wears a cross blessed by the Pope around his neck, and always close to his heart.

“It’s a gift I always wear,” Serrato said.

It was a loud and unforgettable encounter where Orange County Serrat feeds children in Orange County through the charity of Katerina’s club.

“I had the privilege of seeing him for what I was doing,” Serrat said.

Serrat was invited to meet Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Square, a large square in front of St. Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican city. He presented the book, “The Power of Pasta” to the Pope.

In return, Serrat said he received the words.

Elizabeth Chabola and her 86-year-old mother made lifelong dreams come true when they visited the Vatican city in October and were chosen to meet Pope Francis. Darsha Phillips will report to the NBCLA on April 21, 2025 at 530 PM.

“After knowing Pope Francis, the poor are his priority for him to help them,” Serrat said. “It was overwhelming. He touched my shoulder and said, “Bravo, bravo. And he looked at me and smiled.”

Serrat is familiar with celebrities, but he said meeting Pope Francis is surreal and completely different.

“Remember, Pope Francis represents St. Peter, the first apostle of Jesus. It means a tradition that was two thousand years ago,” Serrat said. “When you met him, it’s indescribable… because I had seen the Pope before. But I met him one-on-one. I spoke to him and received a gift from him. It was amazing.”

He shared some photos of the meeting with Pope Francis on his Instagram page.

The White House was damaged in a fire in February 2017. This is a devastating experience that Serrat said he tested his faith. Blessed by Pope Francis, another cross sent to him was lost in the fire, but Serrato said that the firefighters had found the rosary in the tiled rub.

“I said, ‘Okay, that’s a sign from Pope Francis, from God or something,” Serrat said.

One of seven children, Serrato was born in France, whose parents, later returned to Italy. He served in the Italian Air Force for a year before moving to the United States in 1980, and was knighted by the Italian government.

His Anaheim restaurant reopened in May 2018.

The Vatican says Pope Francis’ body will be moved to St. Peter’s Cathedral Wednesday morning, allowing worshippers to pay their respects prior to Saturday’s funeral.
