As a series of systematic distraction theft and robberies have recently plagued Los Angeles residents and targeted primarily elderly Hispanic men and women, police today urged residents to be vigilant and provide safety tips.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a series of thefts have occurred, with men and women being of white descent, and perhaps only Eastern Europe. The two suspects walk towards the victim, or approach them in a rental car during the day, asking if they need to pray, ask for instructions, or praise the jewel.
According to a police statement, “When you engage to a suspect, the suspect will provide the victim with a ‘better’ gem.” “Using the tricks they have, they place fake gems around the victim’s neck while simultaneously stealing the real piece.”
The victims were generally unaware of the robbery until the suspect escaped, police said. Sometimes children are present in the suspect’s means and serve as additional distractions.
The department shared some safety tips with the public.
Avoid interacting with strangers who approach you from inside the car. Report suspicious activity, including unfamiliar vehicles that remain in residential areas. If possible, document the license plate number and be aware of the suspect’s description. If you become a victim, avoid dealing with fake gems with your bare hands to maintain evidence of potential DNA. And we continue to inform and support senior communities who are not generally used to monitoring social media and are not accustomed to constantly following crime prevention tips.
