Two suspects of theft have been arrested after being found in El Segundo with more than $500,000 stolen sports cards and memorabilia.

On April 10, El Segundo police responded to an ongoing theft at Bullpen Sports headquarters in the 200 block of Center Street at 4:30pm.

A male and female suspects were inside the store. When the male suspect saw police arrive at the scene, he tried to escape, but was tackled by an officer just outside the entrance to the store.

He began fighting the officers and tried to reach for the waistband, which contained a fully loaded handgun, police said. The officers were able to conquer him and detain him.

Inside the suspect’s vehicle, police found hundreds of stolen ID cards, stolen passports, methamphetamine, a loaded gun, stolen collectible sports cards worth $500,000 and rare memorabilia.

Mitchell Guttenberg, co-owner of Bullpen Sports HQ, said the pair first visited the store on March 25th and were about to sell a number of sports cards.

“They were calm,” recalls Guttenberg. “They said their father had passed away and he had been together for years.”

Without doubting anything strange, Guttenberg purchased the card from the suspect, but he is later informed that the card was reported to have been stolen.

When they showed up again in the store on April 10th, Guttenberg immediately called the police.

The male suspect was arrested for possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property, drug charges, driving a stolen vehicle, and being a felony resisting resistance/delay/disability by a peace officer.

The woman was arrested for possession of stolen property, possession of two or more prior convicted hard drugs, and possession of prior convicted identity theft.

During the investigation, officers learned that the suspect is likely responsible for robbery of a storage unit on which a high-value sports card worth around $500,000 was filmed.

Police did not disclose the pair’s identity as theft was under investigation. Anyone with information can call El Segundo Police Station at 310-524-2200.
