The Navy will no longer pursue the zero emissions target established under the Biden administration, Secretary John Phelan announced Wednesday.

“We need to focus on having a deadly, ready naval power that is not hindered by ideologically motivated regulations,” Phelan said in a video announcing the withdrawal of the Navy Climate Action 2030 plan.

The plan calls for the Navy to use 100% emission vehicles by 2035 and 100% carbon-free power sources by 2030, reducing scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 65%.

Navy facilities along the coast are threatened by rising sea levels and rising storms, claiming Meredith Berger, former secretary of energy, facilities and environment at the time.

“2030 is the first marker we set because the scientific community and others say it’s a decade of decisive action, and we take it very seriously,” she told reporters.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegses praised Phelan’s move in a post from X: “Well done.”

Under Biden’s Navy Secretary, Carlos del Toro, the Services branch has produced a 32-page document deeming climate change “one of the most unstable forces of our time.”

It laid out a series of climate-related threats to the navy: destructive storms, black flag days above 90 degrees Fahrenheit where intense training is reduced, and tensions on the energy grid over people’s power. The document followed Biden’s own bold plan to make the US economy net-zero emissions by 2050.

During the Obama administration, it was Naby seconds at the time. Ray Mabass has launched an effort called the “Great Green Fleet” aimed at renewable energy sources for warships. The effort was canned in 2017 by the first Trump administration.

In February, Hegses ordered the Pentagon agencies to identify 8% of their budgets that could be cut, a “low-impact” Biden-era program, and funds redirected to Trump’s priorities.

Programs that could be placed on the chopping block include “the so-called ‘climate change’ and other eye-catching programs, as well as excessive bureaucracy,” according to Robert Sayres’ deputy deputy chief.
