Cardinal Roger Mahoney, a retired archbishop of Los Angeles, witnesses the seal of Pope Francis’ co-seal before Vatican services, including a new papal funeral approved by a simplified ritual.
US Cardinal Kevin Farrell leads the ceremony. Born in Hollywood and raised in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, Farrell and Mahony are joined by several other cardinals demanded for seniority. Once the cas is sealed, the funeral mass continues on Saturday.
Following the funeral mass, Mahony will be part of the procession at Santa Maria Maggiore’s Pope Cathedral, attending the burial of Pope Francis, who died Monday at the age of 88.
“I was shady and I was honored when I received the news that I was chosen for these special roles,” said Cardinal Mahoney. “Pope Francis and I had a special friendship over the years. We frequently exchanged personal letters.
“It seems God’s surprise never ends and I am pleased that someone from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has been chosen for this role. It is yet another example of the importance of our wonderful Archdiocese. May the consecrated life, and our outstanding hero, continue to bless us all,” the Archdiocese archbishop added.
After the burial, a period of official nine days of lament with the daily masses begins before the Conclave, selecting the successor of the Pope.
Mahoney served for 40 years in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, including Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. He was appointed Archbishop of Los Angeles by St. John Paul II in July 1985 and became Cardinal in June 1991.
Sister Genevieve Janningros was given permission to break protocols while watching Pope Francis’ co-watch at St. Peter’s Cathedral on Tuesday.
Mahony, a senior priest of 204 Cardinal priests in Rome, retired in March 2011 at the age of 75.
After his retirement, his successor announced that Mahony would not play an administrative or public role in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which as of 2005, had a significant Roman Catholic population of 4.3 million.
Mahony was asked about the controversy at the Vatican on Friday.
“No matter what’s going on in the world, there’s always a negative voice,” Mahoney said Friday. “My role is to be a good priest and a good priest and continue the work of Jesus. And if I have made many mistakes in the past, I have made mistakes in the past.
Mahony is not part of the Pope Conclave who chooses a new Pope.
At noon on Friday in Los Angeles, Southern Californians join Archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose H. Gomez, to join the Memorial Mass in memory of Pope Francis. The 12:10pm Mass at Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels in downtown Los Angeles will include auxiliary bishops of the Archbishop of Los Angeles and other clergymen.
The former archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina and the first Latin American pope lie in the province in a simple wooden ffin inside St. Peter’s Cathedral. He is dressed in a red liturgical outfit, his hands are folded and holding a rosary.
Francis was diagnosed with chronic lung disease and was admitted to the hospital on February 14th due to a respiratory episode that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days in the hospital and made his final show on Easter Sunday.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has created a special web page dedicated to Francis, lacatholics.org/pope-francis. Includes Gomez’s statement, sacred and other Francis writings, videos, images and other resources. The Archdiocese said the page will be updated with information about the masses and other events during Novendiales, a nine-day period of mourning for the deceased Pope.
