State that allows illegal immigrants to collect unemployment benefits could potentially lose federal funds, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez Deremer said Friday.
In every letter to the governor, Chavez Deremar urged him to comply with President Donald Trump’s orders, ensuring that taxes do not illegally benefit the people of America.
“Unemployment benefits in our country exist only for workers who are eligible to receive them,” writes Chavez Deremar. “To qualify for unemployment, you must be able to actively seek jobs and be legally permitted to accept employment in the United States. Unemployment benefits are not handouts for illegal people in our country.”

Chavez-Deremer urged states to use Save, an online database of registered federal, state, and local government agencies, to check the immigration status of applicants seeking benefits or licenses.
The move comes as the Trump administration continues to crack down on illegal immigrants who receive taxpayer benefits.
On Thursday, Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins said the US Food and Drug Administration (USDA) is taking action to ensure illegal immigrants no longer receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), widely known as food stamps.

“The USDA nutrition program is aimed at supporting the most vulnerable Americans,” Rollins said. “It’s outrageous to allow those who have broken our laws by illegally entering the United States with these interests.”
Last month, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner warned that HUD is prioritizing Americans only under the Trump administration to illegal immigrants living in government-funded homes.

“At HUD, we serve only one of the four Americans we should serve. “And we don’t just make it a priority, but we also consider the only priority: American citizens benefit from the dollars of hardworking American taxpayers.”
