The US Treasury Department and the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) discovered last week that inappropriate payment requests have been identified in the hundreds of millions of dollars after performing live on their first automated payment system.

In fact, the system has discovered an inappropriate payment request of $334 million that was flagged for budget codes, invalid budget codes and shortages of budget codes without approval.

Doge, led by billionaire Elon Musk, announced his discoveries in an X post.

In the post, Doge said an example of an invalid budget code is whether the payment is not linked to the budget. I also provided an example of a budget code without approval saying that the budget has already been fully spent.

The news was often left blank several months after Doge learned about identification codes that link U.S. Treasury payments to budget items that account for nearly $4.7 trillion in payments.

“The Treasury Access Symbol (TAS) is an identification code that links Treasury payments to budget items (standard financial processes),” Doge wrote in a February X post. “In the federal government, the TAS field is an option with a payment of ~$4.7 trillion, often left blank, making traceability almost impossible. As of Saturday, this is a necessary area and is increasing insight into where you actually go.”

Doge thanked the US Treasury for its work identifying areas of options.

According to the Department of Finance Services under the Ministry of Finance, the TAS code describes one of the account identification codes assigned by the Ministry of Finance, also known as “accounts.”

All financial transactions made by the federal government are classified by TAS when reporting to the Department of Treasury and the Office of Management and Budget.

The department’s site has found $160 billion in savings, with savings equaling $993.70 per taxpayer.

Doge was offensive in its mission to eradicate wasted spending and reduce the scope of the federal government.
