A march supporting Los Angeles County union workers demanding better pay was arrested Tuesday.
Aerial footage of Sky5 shows purple-covered protesters gathered in downtown Los Angeles on Monday after negotiations with service employees United Nations 721.
It is unclear exactly how many protesters have been detained and what accusations they may face.
“Over 12 members of LA County put their bodies on the perimeter with acts of civil disobedience,” the union wrote on social media. “This is how courage looks. This is how we demand respect. It’s loud and unshakable. It’s unshakable. It’s not afraid.”
According to the Associated Press, this is the first time that all 55,000 union members have been struck.
Union leaders told the Los Angeles Times that the protest was caused by “the county’s failure to negotiate a new contract fairly.”
“Obviously they thought they were beyond the law. They thought we would never attack,” Union Head’s David Green told the Times in a statement. “I thought they were wrong.”
Margins are expected again on Mayday Thursday, where protests across the country will target the Trump administration for action against immigrants and workers.
“Making America under the banner,” May Day’s march and rally will ties together leaders of SEIU members with a solidarity show with the immigrant community and condemn the Trump administration’s ongoing attacks on immigrants and workers,” the union said in a news release. “A strong coalition will increase the unified demand for a living wage, a safer workplace, and a future with dignity for all workers.”
