The impressive Los Angeles County workers plan to gather outside of work for the final day of the 48-hour strike over contract negotiations.
United Nations local 721 members of more than 55,000 service employees, including public works employees, public and mental health professionals, social workers, parks and recreation officials, continued their strike Monday night.
On Wednesday, strike workers will rally outside of work locations, including the Los Angeles General Medical Center in Boyle Heights.
The strike is scheduled to end at 7pm on Wednesday. The strike had affected some services, including the county’s non-emergency medical clinic, public libraries, wildfire cleanup services, trash pickup and homeless encampment enforcement.
On Tuesday, a large group of strikers marched in downtown Los Angeles Street.
Until late Tuesday morning, a large crowd with a picket sign (mostly wearing purple SEIU 721 shirts) gathered in downtown Los Angeles. The Union bused over a rally that began outside the Temple Street Management Hall of Fame.
The march reduced traffic and led to the arrests of around 12 people.
The strike is expected to continue until Wednesday evening, causing various public services to halt or disrupt. Ted Chen is reporting NBC4 News’ report on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025 at 5pm.
Around 12:30pm, about 12 people were detained for sitting on Figureroa Street and obstructing the road in a coordinated display of civil disobedience. Individuals peacefully surrendered to police officers, and by early Tuesday afternoon most of the crowd had been dispersed.
They were quickly processed, cited and released in the scene.
The union and county representatives met Tuesday, according to the union. There is no march planned for Wednesday.
According to the Service Employing Employees International Union Rocal 721, the two-day strike that began Monday follows a failed negotiation with the county for a new contract after it ended in March.
The union represents employees working in the county of 10 million residents, including public health professionals, social workers, park and recreational staff, custodians and administrative workers. The union said it was the first time that all of its approximately 55,000 members have taken a strike.
