Dems in the Boston area buy thousands of “red cards” to inform immigrants of their rights

A Massachusetts Democrat bought thousands of red cards intended to remind immigrants of their constitutional rights if they approach ice or related institutions.

Based around six miles northwest of Boston, the Medford City Democratic Commission has already purchased 4,000 cards intended for use by citizens and non-citizens alike.

This card lists the rights to Article 4 and 5th amendments. Protects against warrantless searches, seizures and having to talk to authorities without legal advisors.

The committee’s website features memos of Medford City Councillor Matthew Lemming, printed in English on one side, along with Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and Haitian translations.

Democrats from Medford, Massachusetts have 4,000 red cards in various languages ready to be distributed. An additional 4,000 have been reportedly reported. (WFXT)

He wrote, “A red card is like a useful business card that can be handed over to an officer if approached in a public setting.”

According to WFXT, a Boston Fox affiliate, the initiative cost $826.

Leming told Fox News Digital that taxpayer funds were not used to grant the program. Rather, he said the Democratic city committee had put forward the bill.

“We’re just trying to find that we can resist what’s going on at the federal level,” Leming told WFXT. “This is a way to protect immigrant communities from current administration actions.”

“The card lists basic constitutional protections that apply to everyone, and everyone in the United States must recognize their constitutional rights,” he further pointed out when asked by Fox News Digital.

The legal complexity of such initiatives is clear. And whether constitutional rights apply to illegal immigration can be a hot point in debate among jurists.

Leming hopes to take the initiative further.

“What we’re trying to do is find nonprofits who are willing to sign up and provide receipts for financial purposes. “Many of our actions are limited by the Campaign Finance Act.”

Medford’s “red card” initiative comes amid a widespread pushback by Blue State officials on Trump’s administration’s crackdown on immigration. This protests a recent court ruling that seeks to curb the ability of Congress members to suppress the detention of MS-13 gang member Kilmer Abrego Garcia, and its ability to restrain the Border Patrol’s ability to restrain patrol forces.

Kyle Schmidbauer is the production assistant for Fox News Digital. A graduate of Montclair State University in New Jersey, he joined Fox in 2022.
