A horrifying murder mystery unfolds in an apartment in Southern California

Residents of the building’s apartment building in Valley Village are scared and frustrated as the building’s horrible murder remains unsolved and management in the vast complex has so far done nothing to improve the building’s security.

The victim, now 53 years old, identified as Menache “Manny” Hydra, lived on the top floor of the five-storey Ashton Sherman Village Apartments, in the 12,600 block of Riverside Drive.

The 53-year-old body was found inside his apartment on April 26th, but was only found after an official who called police for a welfare check and said Manny had been ill with Covid.

Three days before the uneasy and tragic discovery, Matthew Maxfield, who lives in the apartment under the murder scene, told KTLA about 3am on April 23rd that he was screaming and someone screaming for help.

“I just woke up with some loud voices and something crashed,” he said. “There was a scream and I called for our safety. And I called the police shortly afterwards.”

What’s even more frightening is the security footage of the house obtained by KTLA capturing men.

The suspect is seen in surveillance footage of attempting to enter the apartment on April 23, 2025. In the footage, a man called a Hispanic man between the ages of 30 and 40 is seen visiting door-to-door and trying to force several units to his path.

Many residents said they didn’t want to go to cameras due to safety concerns, and it appears that anyone who committed the murders entered an empty five-story apartment and climbed from that balcony to the victim’s balcony.

A photo of the bloody exterior of the building between the two balconies strengthens these claims and a photo of the bloody door handle leading to an exit stairwell where the killer may have escaped after the murder.

“I’m passing those bloodstains every day right now,” a resident who doesn’t want to be identified told KTLA. “They are still there.”

So far, management has rarely quelled the fears of residents other than acknowledging the incident through email readings.

“We understand that such incidents can be of concern and want to ensure that our team is fully working together. Police presence may continue to exist on the scene in the coming days.”

Residents also repeatedly complained to management, saying that temporary items have been reportedly living on the roof of the building for months, with complaints about broken FOBs of security and an easily accessible exterior entrance.

“What are they going to do to keep us safe, what security measures are they taking,” one resident told KTLA.

A news release states that detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department were last seen wearing a male Hispanic suspect, ages 30-40, weighing 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 180-200 pounds, and wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket with a baseball cap, a white shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone who recognizes a man or has information about the investigation is encouraged to contact the LAPD Valley Bureau at 818-374-9559. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the LA Regional Crime Stopper Hotline at 800-222-8477 or leave tips online at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
