A spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District said Marina del Rey School was locked down Wednesday after a firearm that students had left the school.
Westside Global Awareness Magnet, a K-8 grade school, is looking for students accused of taking their guns to campus. According to Lausd, the gun was dropped to the ground after a backpack and then released in the classroom.
“No one hit the bullet,” said a parent who attended the Zoom meeting after the incident. “It bouncing around the class and fell to the ground.”
The school held video conferences with parents to discuss the incident and ensured that students were physically unharmed during the uproar. After the gun disappeared, the school contacted police for further investigation.
Parents involved expressed concern that no precautions were being taken to search for backpacks at school. During the virtual meeting, they sought additional security measures, including searches.
“Even if no one gets injured, there should be more safety precautions,” said Brittany Williamson, mother of a Westside Global student. “This is unacceptable and we are threatening to take our kids out of school.”
Parents were first warned of the incident via text message at 9:11am, then an update was given at 10:40am, and recorded messages came up on the Guardian’s phone.
“The Los Angeles School Police Department will be providing on-campus support and additional patrols for the rest of the week, with plenty of attention,” a LAUSD spokesman said. “The local and school sites will provide mental health support to students affected by this incident.”
School officials and law enforcement are still looking for students who are believed to have taken their guns to campus. They know his identity.
