Los Angeles authorities on Wednesday asked the gun owners who lost their firearms in the Pallisard fire to continue the process of recovering and rendering about 500 guns found in the ashes of the destroyed home.
Many of the guns, including shotguns, rifles and handguns, were severely damaged by the fire, making it difficult for investigators to find the serial number, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
“We recognize that these firearms can retain great sentimental value to their owners, including family heirlooms, historical works, and personal memorabilia, and we are doing our best to reunite with the owner.”
Another reason for the laborious process is related to official recordkeeping.
“You don’t want immeasurable firearms,” Det. Pat Hoffman, who oversees the LAPD gun unit, said there is no question about what happened in the case of an investigation months or years later, as all firearms need to be recorded.
“When you retrieve these firearms, if you can identify them by model, characteristics, or serial number, they will be entered into the (automatic firearms) system,” Hoffman said.
