Step into new LACMA buildings a few months before opening during this Kamasi Washington performance

We crossed the year’s mark until LACMA’s new David Geffen Galleries opened. As promised, the Miracle Mile Museum offers a rather unique opportunity to step into the empty interiors of the building.

Collaborator of LA native Kendrick Lamar and comprehensive saxophone wizard Kamasi Washington found three performances in June this year in the new building, counting the artwork included in April and April 2026. But he is not alone. Over 100 musicians are scattered across 110,000 square feet of vacant gallery space.

The Washington performance on June 26th, 27th and 28th will tackle the harmony of Harmony of Different, a six-moving suite he released eight years ago, but it has never been done entirely live.

“I wrote in 2017 the harmony of differences to celebrate the beauty of human diversity through the musical epiphor,” Washington said in a statement. “In music, it is a combination of different notes, chords and rhythms that create beautiful songs. The same can be said in life. Most of the greatest achievements of humanity came from the efforts of people from different backgrounds with a wide range of knowledge and abilities.”

Washington details the unique acoustic properties of the Geffen Galleries. Visitors will hear both direct sounds from nearby musicians and the “spirit” of other distant groups of performers.

If you want to check out the performance in a building designed by Peter Zumthor, LACMA will release a limited batch of tickets in three waves.
– May 2nd 10am ($60, LACMA members $48)
– May 22nd 10am ($75, LACMA members $60)
– 10am June 12th ($100, LACMA members $80)

This is not the only opportunity to step into the empty gallery, but you must be a LACMA member to take advantage of others. The museum will host a series of sneak peaks divided into membership tiers. Partner-level members reception was held on June 29th. Friends, supporters, and partner level on June 30th. Individual and dual level for July 1st. All levels from July 3rd to 5th. The July 6th Nexgenla members are free membership tiers for under 17 (and adults associated with it).

Return to Harmony of Difference Preview: I’d add that it’s worth watching Washington perform live in almost any environment, but stepping into the empty museum is a unique experience for art and architecture enthusiasts before the walls and artwork change forever. Ten years later, I still look back at the sound and video installation, which took place within the extensive months before it officially opened.
