The Los Angeles Times newsroom lost many people to a new round of layoffs announced on Friday by the Los Angeles Times Guild, a union of journalists.
A total of 14 people were fired this time, and the newsroom lost 6% of its staff.
The union said this was the third round of newsroom layoffs in recent years. In January 2025, more than 115 journalists were let go, destroying almost a quarter of the newsroom of the time.
“What once was one of the most widely read newspapers in the country has become a shadow of our former self, and in just three years we’ve halved our rank,” the union said in a statement.
The group also accused the company’s management of lack of a “business plan,” especially after LA Times owner Patrick Zion withdrew support in the 2024 presidential election, causing massive cancellations of subscribers.
“When our staff is cut off every year, it’s difficult to carry out our mission,” the guild said. “But we will continue to report and we will continue to fight for our members, our readers, our subscribers and our city.”
