Sovereignty beats journalism in the 151st Kentucky Derby – NBC Los Angeles

Sovereignty has broken journalism… in horse racing.

The 151st Kentucky Derby won sovereignty and was separated from journalism by death.

Baeza finished third in the races that Citizen Bull, Bob Baffert Horse and Neoequos led most early stages up to the final turn.

Before the Derby Audience record of 147,406, journalism pushed far ahead of hitting the field on the final turn, but sovereignty coincided with output before extending the lead at the finish line.

Journalism was a bet favorite for most builds up until the Derby, including that day. Sandman came in with the second best odds, and was considered an “American pick,” with Japan’s Luxor Cafe closing out the top three.

Sovereignty trainer Venezuelan junior Alvarado was filled with joy after winning his first derby.

“It means the world to me. My family is here. I thought there was a great opportunity,” Alvarado told NBC Sports after the race. Alvarado also thanked his parents and told them in Spanish that he loved them.

William Mott, a 71-year-old sovereign trainer, won his third triple crown race. He won the Belmont Stakes for the first time at Drosselmeyer in 2010, and won his first Derby victory in the Country House in 2019.

Final Gambit and Owen Almighty concluded the top five on the leaderboard, with Sandman falling to seventh.

The race featured a sophomore wallet that earned the winner’s sovereignty and raised $3.1 million. Second place journalism still won a $1 million award.

The flooded weather affected the typical untouched conditions of a 1 1/4 mile race. The 13 horses in the Derby, including journalism, were not competing on the wet track. Coal Battles used to be 2-2 in races like this, but Luxor Cafe had the 3-4 mark.

The 2024 Kentucky Derby will take less than a week. Drill into the rich history and the fascinating details behind one of the most historic horse racing.

Neo Ecos and the American Promise also won at least one victory on the wet track. Churchill Downs’ final wet track was 2019, marking Deja Vu on Mott.

Returning to the venue after a three-year suspension, Bob Buffert injured one horse Rodriguez a few days before the race. However, he still had Citizen Bull, a betting favorite near the top five, as another representative of the field.

Last year’s 150th Derby was a thrilling photo finish. There, Mystic Dan narrowly surpasses Sierra Leone and is forever young.

Sovereignty looks forward to the Preakness Stakes at the Triple Crown bid on May 17th.

The last horse to win all three Triple Crown races, including the Belmont Stakes, was justified in 2018.
