According to multiple media outlets, Americans on vacation in Rome recovered after climbing the fence at the ruins of the Colosseum, falling and being stabbed by metal spikes in front of other horrifying tourists.
The incident unfolded around 5pm on May 2nd, according to Italian News on Italian News on Italy’s News Outlet Day, and shocked witnesses are immediately seeking help.
The 47-year-old, who has not yet been identified, reportedly passed away by bringing the spikes to his lower back and screaming in pain, Huffpost reported.
He “was stuck in a painful and dramatic position,” the first responder was out, an eyewitness told an Italian outlet.

After assessing the situation, paramedics gave the man a sedative while working to pull him away from the spike, which took about 20 minutes, Italian reported. Medical personnel worked at the scene to contain the bleeding, then rushed the man to San Giovanni Hospital in Rome for emergency surgery due to the deep wound.

The man reportedly was stable after the surgery, requiring over 80 stitching, but it is unclear whether there was permanent damage to the spine.
It is unclear why an American who currently lives in Tawain and was visiting Italy with family and friends climbed the fence in the first place.
Some reports suggest that he is trying to take a selfie or get a better view of world-famous tourist attractions.
Police in Rome began investigating the incident and have since questioned the man.
