President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he wanted to return Alcatraz to be used as the largest security prison despite being closed for more than 60 years.
It stopped functioning as a prison in 1963 and became a national park 10 years later. It is the most popular in the country, attracting over 1.4 million visitors each year and is designated a national historic landmark.

How big is Alcatraz?
Aside from the island where the prison was built, the area spreads out into the national imagination is just 22 acres in the middle of San Francisco Bay.
This is the size of Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan. This includes 30 Rock and NBC Universal offices, or the Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta, known for its pipe bomb explosions during the 1996 Summer Olympics.
The island is 1.5 miles from the San Francisco coast.
What does the name Alcatraz mean?
According to the history of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Alcatraz was named “La Isla de los Alcatraces” or “The Island of Pelicans” by Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala during his mapping of San Francisco Bay in 1775. The Federal Bureau of Prisons states that, while the exact meaning is still debated, “Alcatraz is usually defined as a “pelican” or “strange bird.”
In the early 1850s, following the California Gold Rush and the subsequent boom, US forces built forts or fortresses on the island’s top. The lighthouse became its first job on the Pacific coast in 1854.

By the late 1850s, the first military prisoners would be trapped on the island and continue to serve as prisons for over 100 years.
The military moved the island to the Federal Prison Bureau in 1933, and used it as the largest security prison for the worst prisoners in federal custody. The famous names being held here: Robert Stroud or the so-called “Birdman of Alcatraz”, George Machine Gunn “Kelly”, Alvin Calpis, he was the first “Public Ainnan #1”, Arthur “Dock Barker, Son of Ma Barker”. Birdman had no birds, the Prison Bureau says.
Most prisoners were less well known, but were considered a risk of violence or escape.
Did the prisoners escape from Alcatraz?
According to the Prison Bureau, this is not the time to define escape as a successful land reaching and not being caught.

It has only tried 14 times in the 29 years it was run by the prison. Of the 36 men who attempted, two, 23 people were caught, six were shot dead, and two were killed in their own deaths.
