President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he wanted to return Alcatraz to be used as the largest security prison despite being closed for more than 60 years.
It stopped functioning as a prison in 1963 and became a national park 10 years later. It is the most popular in the country, attracting over 1.4 million visitors each year and is designated a national historic landmark.

How big is Alcatraz?
Aside from the island where the prison was built, the area spreads out into the national imagination is just 22 acres in the middle of San Francisco Bay.

What does the name Alcatraz mean?

By the late 1850s, the first military prisoners would be trapped on the island and continue to serve as prisons for over 100 years.
The military moved the island to the Federal Prison Bureau in 1933, and used it as the largest security prison for the worst prisoners in federal custody. The famous names being held here: Robert Stroud or the so-called “Birdman of Alcatraz”, George Machine Gunn “Kelly”, Alvin Calpis, he was the first “Public Ainnan #1”, Arthur “Dock Barker, Son of Ma Barker”. Birdman had no birds, the Prison Bureau says.
Most prisoners were less well known, but were considered a risk of violence or escape.
Did the prisoners escape from Alcatraz?
