That fatal attack occurred just outside the entrance to the high school.
Two male suspects, described by police as Hispanic men, a high school student, fled the scene and remained as a whole. When officers searched for the teenager, boundaries were set up in the area.
The high school was locked up with police tape, along with nearby elementary and middle schools.
Details are limited and it is unclear what led to the fatal altercation, but police said it could be related to the gang.
“Our investigators are still trying to assess the situation, interview victims, witnesses and gather surveillance on the incident,” said Officer Natalie Garcia at the Santa Ana Police Station.
Diana Vazquez said her daughter was friends with the student who was killed.
“When she got home with her friends and they found out, she was shedding tears,” Vasquez said. “She was crying. She couldn’t believe it. She said he was a really nice kid.”
Students and parents were shocked to hear the news and said many people were afraid of being close to campus.
“In times like these where something can happen out of nowhere, it would not be surprising if people felt that it wasn’t the best idea to take more precautions or come to school after something like this happened,” the student told KTLA.
The victim’s identity has not been released. Grief counselors will be on campus on Thursday for students or staff who need additional support.
Anyone with information about the attack is encouraged to call the Santa Ana Police Station at 714-245-8049.
