Inglewood’s historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sophie Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2028 Olympics, which were announced on Thursday.
LA28, the Los Angeles Olympic Organising Committee, announced Thursday morning.
The opening ceremony on July 14th, 2028 will be shared by both the LA Memorial Coliseum at Expo Park and the Sophie Stadium at Inglewood. The closing ceremony will be held at the LA Memorial Coliseum on July 30th, 2028. This will be the first venue to host three Olympic events.
La Memorial Coliseum previously provided the setting for the 1932 and 1984 Olympic events.
“The venue, selected for the opening and closing ceremony in 2028, highlights Los Angeles’ rich sports history and cutting-edge future, and presents the best LA has to offer on the world stage.” “These two extraordinary venues create unforgettable experiences, welcome fans from around the world to unprecedented Olympic and Paralympic games, and concludes what goes down as one of the most incredible games in history.”
As for the competition venue, plans for the 2028 Olympics became even clearer last month as more than a dozen sports locations, including beach volleyball, surfing and baseball. LA28, the Los Angeles Olympic Organising Committee, has presented the International Olympic Committee with an updated list of 2028 Olympic venues.
Other sports venues have been announced previously, including the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, the BMO Stadium at the Expo Park, the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown LA, crypto.com Arena, the Sports Complex in Carson, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and the City of Los Angeles, and the Rose Bowl outside Los Angeles.
The 2028 Medal Events Program, what the LA28 Organising Committee called the “Monumental Step Forward,” features six new mixed gender team events. The program, which was approved in 2028, has 22 medal events over 351 Paris 2024.
Added in 2028 Mixed Team Events include artistic gymnastics, track and field (4×100 mixed gender relay), golf, archery (combined bow), coastal rowgi beach sprints and table tennis. The competitive format for the new artistic gymnastics mix team event will be finalized and announced at a later date.

Flag Football made its Olympic debut in 2028, and Lacrosse is returning to its medal sports lineup for the first time in over a century. Baseball and softball make Olympic comebacks, while cricket will also be part of the lineup.
