Students at Panorama City’s Catholic schools were glued to television when they witnessed history as more than a billion Catholics around the world welcomed the new Pope on Thursday.
All television at St. Genevieve High School was tailored to the ceremony that Pope Leo XIV introduced to the world.
After the school community mourned Pope Francis’ death, many of the students of St. Genevieve were able to see the process of Thor’s first Pope selection.
“It’s really exciting,” said Mia Cacares, 11th grader. “I felt pure joy.”
Several students said they felt a lot of emotions and saw important opportunities.
“I was waiting for that. It’s like a presidential election to see who the next leader is,” said 11th grader Philip Nativid-dodo.
Last week, students held a special Mass to remind them of the late Pope Francis, showing off the dark leather shoes that their beloved Pope once wore.
Now the students know who was ultimately tasked with filling Francis’ shoes.
“There’s a lot to satisfy, especially with what Pope Francis did,” Natividad added. “But I’m sure Pope Leo is going to do great things.”
For young Catholics, realizing future history lessons at that moment was a rare change.
“It weighs a lot because it is the first American pope,” the Nachvidd said. “But we know for sure that our new Pope is trying to do what he is called to do with the Holy Spirit. He is trying to do great things, and he is trying to represent us very well.”
