According to church leaders from the Archdiocese of Chicago, newly elected Pope Leo XIV is a Cubs fan, as he is fond of the first popes from America.
Leo XIV’s election was announced worldwide on Thursday, marking the historic moment when Chicago-born cardinal Robert Francis Prevast was chosen as the new leader of the Catholic Church.
The 69-year-old Pope, a member of the Augustinians, a religious order within the Catholic Church, was born in Chicago, studied at Villanova University, and was appointed priest in 1982 and became cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.
He served as governor of the Vatican Dicastelli and president of the Latin American Bible Committee for the bishop.

The Archdiocese of Chicago celebrated the news of the Pope’s election at a press conference Thursday. There, she shared insights into what Leo is.
Bishop Lawrence Sullivan, auxiliary bishop of Chicago, said, “Pope Francis was certainly a caregiver for those living in Fringe, which could easily be forgotten, and I strongly suspect that Pope Leo, 14th, would do the same.
Sullivan said Leo “brings a variety of perspectives,” including “what it means to be born in Chicago, what it means to be educated here in America, what it means to be served in Peru.”
He said Leo’s previous leadership role in the Vatican “has a true practical knowledge of the meaning of serving the poor and helping those in need,” and he said he is “very familiar with the world’s churches.”

On May 8th, 2025, the newly elected Pope Leo XIV will appear on the balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican.
“God’s people are not confined to the borders of the nation,” Sullivan said, “At this point he is not American. He is God’s child, and that’s how he guides and tries to take all people into consideration.”
Nevertheless, Father Gregory Sakovic, president of Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral, said, “You can never deny your roots. So I’m sure he has a love for Chicago, a love for America. That’s part of his upbringing.”

With a smile, Sakovic said, “One of the fiery questions I have is the fact that the Pope, the 14th Leo, or Cardinal, then Robert Prevost, was born in Chicago, south. Is he a fan of the Chicago White Sox?”
Sakowicz said he didn’t know if Leo is a White Sox fan, but he knows “he’s a Cubs fan.”
“I heard he’s a Cubs fan. Well, God bless him, God bless all his fans,” Sakovic said.
