The California Highway Patrol has new tools to stop reckless drivers who travel at triple digit speeds and engage in road rage.
The agency will deploy 100 cars, Dodge Duragos, to give executives “significant advantages.”
“They allow them to identify and stop drivers who are at risk for others, and have a professional and visible presence even after enforcement action is needed,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Dury.
The new vehicle, black with grey markings, is intended to blend in with other vehicles on the road, allowing officers to observe dangerous drivers without “immediate detection.”
With 30% speeds of often fatal collisions being blamed on California roads, CHP said new vehicles will help prevent deaths and injuries while cracking down on “video game style” driving.
“In the real world, offensive lane weaving, triple digit speeds, road rage are not part of a high-score strategy. They are fatal,” CHP said.
The first 25 secret vehicles will be deployed throughout the state this week.
And next month, all specially marked vehicles will be deployed on high-risk roads, CHP said.
Over 390,000 crashes occur each year, with nearly a day report of reckless driving around the state.
