Trump’s recommended tariffs suggest that it will come ahead of the weekend meeting between Bescent and chief trade negotiator Jamieson Greer and the emperor of China’s economy
“That’s the number the president has thrown there, and see what happens this weekend,” White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt said during a press conference on Friday, adding that Trump should not unilaterally lower tariffs and that China should make “concessions.”

Earlier this week, Trump said China is eager to do business with the US.
“Scott will go to Switzerland and meet with China,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. “And they want to do so many deals. We all can play games. Who made the first call and who made them? That doesn’t matter. It’s just the thing that happens in that room. But China wants to do so many deals.

The Trump administration announced extensive tariffs across multiple countries on April 2 following criticism that other countries’ trade practices were unfair to the United States.

The administration later coordinated its first proposal, and announced on April 9 that it would impose a 145% tariff on Chinese products, while also reducing the 90-day mutual tariff to a 10% baseline. China responded by increasing tariffs on US goods to 125%.
