After nearly a decade of boldness in the heart of Koreatown, one of LA’s most inventive restaurants calls it the night. We’re looking at you as a community-driven spot that goes against the genre of restaurateur Lien TA and late chef Jonathan Whitener. We will be serving our last meal on Friday, June 13th.
The closure was announced on May 6th in a Heartfelt Instagram post from TA. “We can argue that we should get used to it by now, but… no, we definitely aren’t. To the best guests in the world, I’m very sorry. The closure coincides with the end of the restaurant’s 10-year lease and the end of her own chapter in the restaurant’s world, as TA points out.
Opened in 2016, Hlay quickly won a cult thanks to its genre hopping menu (one day, the frog’s feet covered by the frog were the next one). Whitener, formerly an animal chef de Cuisin, brought bold creativity to the kitchen, but a veteran hospitality TA has fixed deep care and community experiences.
Together, the duo launched their baby all day at Silver Lake, which closed in late 2024. But it was hlay that in early 2024, the pandemic era closures, landlord negotiations, and even the miserable loss of Whitener remained true north.
“We’re fortunate to have seen chefs throughout his skewers, his chip era. “When Hlay thought he would definitely close last spring, this little powerful army left it open with a massive honor.”
In these final weeks, the restaurant will offer what TA calls a celebration of “my favorite living restaurant.” So if you have never reached this Koreatown gem, or if you want just one final plate of something you will never forget, you will have it until June 13th.
