BARTHOOD, Colorado (KDVR) – A small Colorado community lamentes the loss of a famous woman who was shot dead in a random act of violence.
Jennifer James, 49, beats cancer four times, but was only shot at her own Belloud home with a bullet that says investigators were fired from a stranger’s car.

Two bullets passed through the window and the wall, killing Jennifer James.
“It makes me mad that such meaningless violence happened and that it doesn’t think it will happen to you,” James’ eldest son, Ashley James, said in an interview with FOX31.
Jennifer James was shot and killed inside her home on April 28, 2025, and her loss left a hole in the Berthoud community.
On all accounts, James was loved by many in Berthoud.
She was passionate about helping children who were battling cancer.
She loved helping to find animals at home and was a huge fan of the Denver Nuggets.
The bullet investigators say comes from a stranger’s gun. There is a hole in the heart of this community.
“She was the most selfless mom anyone could ask for. She was a lifelong devoted to our children, so I’ll be forever grateful for everything she did for us,” James said.

The shooting took place around 11:20pm on April 28, according to an affidavit for the suspect’s warrantless arrest obtained by FOX31.
Two of James’ children were at home at the time of the shooting.
According to the affidavit, Larimar County Sheriff’s investigators used surveillance video and license plate reader data to track the suspect.
The sheriff’s office arrested 20-year-old Ebenezer Works from Denver and charged him with first-degree murder.
Worku claimed he accidentally fired the gun twice. He was booked into the Larimar County Jail and $1.25 million in cash-only bonds were issued.
James’ funeral is scheduled to take place later this month.
