Beneath the floorboards of the U.S. Capitol building are hidden staircases and passages left from the original construction of the iconic 18th century building.
“Construction began in the 1700s and there are all sorts of hidden corridors. As you saw, I just pulled this hideout and you can see,” Moore said in a video posted on Friday on his official Congress X account.
The construction of the US Capitol was commissioned in 1793, and President George Washington laid the foundation stone in the same year. The original building was completed in 1826 and has undergone various expansions over the decades, including the Visitor Centre, which opened in 2008.

“We’re short of what we call Statues Halls, once a real residential room. But this is just some of the little hidden secrets of the Capitol,” Moore said.

The lawmaker added that he had heard through the lore of the Capitol buildings that the stairs below the Lincoln room were used by British soldiers in the war of 1812 to set fire to the historic buildings. The British soldiers, known as the “Burning of Washington,” in August 1814, set fire to the US Capitol, the Washington Navy Yard and the White House before the storm put out the fire and soldiers were called to the DC to protect them from British forces. The war of 1812 ended in 1815.
