President Donald Trump’s administration fired the highest copyright officer in the United States a few days after finishing Congressional librarians.

Shira Perlmutter was in charge of the US Copyright Office, which is overseen by the Library of Congress until his sudden firing on Saturday.

The US Copyright Office told Fox News Digital that Perlmutter received an email from the White House, saying, “Your position as the copyright register and director of the US Copyright Office will soon be over.”

Trump fired Congressional librarian Carla Hayden on Thursday, the first woman and the first African-American to become Congressional librarian. The end was part of the ongoing cleansing of administrations of government officials who are perceived to oppose Trump and his agenda.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the issue of Fox News Digital.

Hayden tapped Perlmutter in October 2020 to lead the copyright office.

Like Perlmutter, the Associated Press reported that Hayden was notified via email that he fired fire.

“Carla,” an email from the White House presidential office reportedly began. “On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to let you know that your position as a librarian in Congress has soon ended. I would like to thank you for your service.”

Perlmutter’s office recently released a report examining whether artificial intelligence companies can “train” AI systems using copyrighted materials.

The report follows a review that began in 2023 with opinions from thousands of individuals, including AI developers, actors and country singers.

The Copyright Bureau revealed its approach in January, as it was based on the “centrality of human creativity” when writing works that guarantee copyright protection. The Copyright Bureau incorporates approximately 500,000 copyright applications each year, covering millions of creative works.

“If that creativity is expressed using AI systems, it continues to enjoy protection,” Perlmutter said in January. “Protecting materials where expressive elements are determined by machines will undermine, rather than promote the constitutional goal of copyright.”

Perlmutter, a law degree, was previously the Director of Policy at the Patent and Trademark Office, working in other areas of copyright and intellectual property.

She previously worked for the Copyright Office in the late 1990s.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
