This weekend, during the “mini heat wave” in Southern California, rescues were primarily needed from hiking trails.
Temperatures have risen to record levels. It could have probably surprised the outdoor explorers, especially on Saturday.
Officials and the Los Angeles Times report that on Saturday alone there were 15 fever-related rescues in Orange County and nine fever-related rescues in Riverside County. One of the rescues was caught in video by the OC Fire Department, which is viewable above.
“Over dozens of people were collectively rescued,” OCFA said in a Facebook post Saturday before 2pm. “According to the National Weather Service, it’s now 96°F at Aliso Viejo.”
On the same day, crews at the Los Angeles Fire Station airlifted a 55-year-old hiker suffering from heat exhaustion on the trail next to a Hollywood sign.
Temperatures hit record highs like 104 at Riverside, 103 at Woodland Hills and 98 at Anaheim, with county leaders asking the public to stay cautious and hydrated, especially while spending time outside.
“Unless you’re an experienced hiker/rider in this terrain and weather, I recommend you wait until it cools down,” the OCFA post continued. “If you’re going out, bring a lot of hydration with you.”
However, Mother’s Day predictions suggested that KTLA’s Kaj Goldberg would sink in time for work week when temperatures drop to most of the SOCAL.
Temperatures were still above normal, but Goldberg said Sunday there was some low numbers and record-breaking heat.
