First on FOX: Ohio Freshman GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno introduced legislation to increase criminal penalties that hurt officers after the sheriff’s aide was killed on a mission in Cincinnati, Ohio earlier this month.

Introduced this week, Moreno’s Larry Henderson Act updates existing laws that show that, depending on the severity level, it forces to attack, resist, oppose, obstruct, intimidate or interfere with law enforcement officials engaged in official duties facing a one- to eight-year prison.

Moreno’s bill would increase its mandatory minimum to 20 years.

The bill also establishes “federal jurisdiction over these crimes as “exclusive and preemptive, exclusive, as a local prosecutor or local prosecutor to federal officers.”

“Adequate is enough,” Moreno told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“Everyone who attacks our man or one of our blue women must face serious consequences. The period should be alive today. That’s why I have introduced the law in his honor to protect law enforcement officers.”

The bill is named after Deputy Sheriff Larry Henderson, Hamilton County, Ohio, who was killed when he was attacked by a car while overseeing traffic near the University of Cincinnati at a graduation ceremony.

Authorities say Rodney Hinton was charged with attempted murder shortly after Hinton’s 18-year-old son was shot dead by an officer after allegedly fled to a vehicle stolen while armed.

In a statement, President of the Ohio Brothers’ Order of Police (FOP), Jay McDonald, said Ryan’s father, Rodney Hinton Jr., “deliberately murdered a retired agent who had graduated and fulfilled his special duties because he was a police officer.”

Henderson was a 33-year officer at HCSO and has served in several specialized units since 1991, including the Dive Team, HCPA SWAT, FBI Task Force Officer and the HCSO Bomb Force.

“In Henderson’s deputy tenure as sheriff’s deputy term, I recognized his education and presentation talent,” Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffy said in a statement after Henderson’s death.

“Larry began his journey as a sheriff’s office trainer early in his career. He developed his expertise and became a great trainer. He then trained hundreds of deputy sheriff’s office departments.
