As Los Angeles high school seniors prepare for graduation, Friday was a recognition day for more than 100 students who have earned high school diplomas from schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District despite facing homelessness and food insecurity.
Soon the graduates celebrated their achievements with food and photography at the 12th LAUSD Graduate School Awards Ceremony.
LAUSD principal Alberto Carvalho said that after overcoming challenges stemming from poverty and lack of housing, students will win academic scholarships from the country’s best universities and universities.
LAUSD estimates that around 80% of students come from low-income families, with nearly 300,000 children living below the poverty line.
“It’s important to provide these kids with the resources they need, housing, food and touring programs, as well as the money for love and scholarships,” Carvalho said.
“I’ll get a scholarship and send it to university, and guarantee my future life,” the director added.
Among the students who were honored on Friday was 18-year-old Dylan Cruz.
“In order to be here, I had to overcome a few challenges,” he said he plans to study broadcasting in college to become a sportscaster.
The LAUSD School graduation ceremony will be held in early June.
