The maximum enforcement period (MEP) of the Memorial Day weekend California Highway Patrol will end tonight at 11:59pm, closing off a four-day advanced traffic enforcement aimed at keeping Southern California fully safe.
The MEP began Friday evening and included an increase in statewide patrols, drinking checkpoints and saturation patrols. CHP officials have focused on the most dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding, driving impaired driving, distracted driving, and failure to wear seat belts.
This year, CHP also launched “slack” vehicles. An invisible police car designed to help catch speed players and reckless drivers who may otherwise try to avoid detection.
The effort addresses troubling data from last Memorial Day weekend, which killed 42 people in a statewide crash. Almost half of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Additionally, more than 1,100 drivers were arrested during the 2024 enforcement period for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Memorial Day MEP is part of a broader CHP initiative targeting major holidays when traffic and dangerous driving behaviors tend to surge. These operations aim to prevent dangerous driving through vision and enforcement, and to encourage Californians to make safe choices behind the wheels.
As the holiday weekend ends and travelers return home, drivers are reminded to stay vigilant, follow traffic laws and always succumb to the brink. The CHP remains on the road all night and works to ensure that everyone is safely home.
