Sen. Ted Cruz of R-Texas introduced a law amending the International Bridge Bridge Act of 1972.

The bipartisan bill by Cruz and Sen. Ben Ray Lejean (DN.M.) has expanded the law previously written by Cruz and moved to a law that streamlined the permits for the International Bridges in Eagle Pass, Laredo and Brownsville.

The new bill streamlines all permits for international bridges and ports of entry in Mexico and Canada.

In a news release, Cruz discussed the new bill being his number one priority.

“The bill has successfully and expanded in securing presidential permits for Texas’ four major international bridge projects by streamlining the process of approval for all future international bridges along the Texas Mexican border,” Cruz said in a news release.

Cruz urged his colleagues to “pass this bill and be sent to the president for signing it.”

Lujan said in a news release that he is proud to introduce bipartisan laws that provide real investments in New Mexico.

“The ports of immigration and international bridges are crucial to the economic success of border communities and support trade, business and tourism,” Lejan said. “Even so, the new border intersections are supported too often by the presidential permitting process.”

Laredo city mayor Dr. Victor Trevinho thanked both House members for putting together this bipartisan bill that strengthens the north and south borders.

“This bill illustrates an important step to modernizing the development and expansion of transnational infrastructure by bringing much needed efficiency and predictability to the presidential permitting process, an essential reform for communities like Laredo, who remain at the forefront of international commerce as the number one international port in the United States.

Trevino also urged Congress to pass the bill so President Donald Trump can sign it.

The bill also includes a ban on future administrations from considering environmental documents, including documents prepared as part of the National Environmental Policy Act.
