New highly contagious strains of Covid-19 have been detected in California and other states. This was discovered as federal officials announced they would no longer support booster shots for healthy children and pregnant women.
As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the strain called NB.1.8.1 was confirmed in California on April 17th, with additional infections detected in Washington, Virginia and New York.
Despite the appearance of the variant, health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday that authorities would no longer recommend healthy children, and pregnant women would receive a booster for the Covid-19 vaccine.
“Pediatricians point out that the youngest infants face the highest risk of hospitalization, just like the elderly,” and the Food and Drug Administration lists pregnancy within the “high-risk condition” of Covid-19.
Last week, federal officials announced that future vaccine doses will be limited to age 65 or older or fundamental health.
