Family of a woman dying in the LA homeless camp says questions remain

The family of the 46-year-old woman, a US military veteran and mother of six, was found dead in a homeless camp, sharing her days and concerns with Los Angeles about how police handled the investigation.

Lucrecia Macias Barajas and an unidentified man were found dead on May 12 in a makeshift sidewalk tent locked up in the Westlake area of LA.

The horrifying discovery was made by one of Barajas’ daughters who tracked her mother’s cell phone to the location. Videos filmed at the scene showed a young woman on the ground, sobbing and later begging police to remove her mother from the tent.

However, officers were still in the tent and were waiting as they were reportedly biting into Barajas’ body as they were still in the tent.

The 46-year-old daughter told the Times that her mother’s body had not been removed from the tent. Earlier the next day, animal services holding the dog as evidence responded to the scene.

According to the daughter who didn’t want to be identified, the bodies of Barajas and the male victims were in the tent with their dog for at least eight hours after they were found.

Barajas’ daughters reportedly were given LAPD detective cards with the word “overdose investigation” written on it, and police now say that they’re too fast to eliminate murder.

Lucrecia Barajas, 46, a veteran Army and mother of six, can be seen in a family photo. Born in Nikuaraga, Barajas fled with his family in 1986 during the Civil War. She later joined the US military between the late 1990s and early 2000s. The daughters told the Times they believe their mothers have begun using methamphetamine as a way to manage raising six children and combat stage 3 lymphoma.

Although the children reportedly never noticed her mother’s drug use, she later went down the street with drug addiction and calmly returned with her family.

Her daughters aren’t sure why she went to camp along Huntley Circle near downtown Los Angeles, but they said there are circumstances surrounding her death that make them suspicious.

One of the suspected issues with the “overdose investigation” is that the tent where the mother and other men were found was locked with a lock outside the entrance, suggesting that a third party could have bolted it when they left the scene.

Additionally, Hans Salinas, a 25-year-old man, said he and his girlfriend woke up around 3:30am that morning and was silent in search of the woman’s screams, following the sounds of the man and woman claimed.

Man, 31, legally ripped from family for 12 years and held on ice

The app where the daughter was tracking her mother’s phone to the area reportedly indicates the 46-year-old, who arrived two hours before Salinas and his girlfriend heard the screams.

Barajas’ daughters also believe police were unable to secure a crime scene, allowing security cameras attached to the makeshift structure to disappear, along with their mother’s mobile phone, to be traced three blocks away to the park after the victim’s body was removed from the tent.

LA Councillor Eunisses Hernandez, on behalf of the Westlake district, spoke with LAPD, telling the Times in a statement “to ensure that families get the answers they deserve.”

In the meantime, the family continues to grieve at unimaginable losses.

“I want people to know that she’s not a homeless drug addict because that’s not true,” one of her daughters told KTLA. “Some people have come to that conclusion, but that’s not fair. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Here is a gofundme organized for the family.
