The eldest son of longtime New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is taking a step forward to following in her mother’s political footsteps.
Stephanie Shaheen announced her candidacy for the US home on Wednesday at an open seat race held in New Hampshire’s competitive 1st Congressional District.
Young Shaheen wasted no time targeting President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Elon Musk pilots Trump’s Government Efficiency (DOGE), Robert F. Kennedy, JR, and Republicans from the Department of Health and Human Services.
In the campaign launch video, Shaheen spotlighted her daughter Elle’s efforts as a healthcare advocate, who suffers from type 1 diabetes. Shaheen said the diagnosis would “transform her into a fierce fighter for medical research and innovation, helping millions like her.”

“So when I see Donald Trump shattering medical research for children, seniors and veterans to give tax credits to billionaires and businesses, and cutting veteran health care, I have to fight back, so I’m running for Congress.
Shaheen in her video claimed that Musk is “driving away our best scientists and doctors,” and that Kennedy “allows measles to ramp out because he believes in conspiracy theory instead of a tried-and-tested vaccine.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the campaign division of House GOP, targeted Shaheen over the political pedigree of a well-known family.

Shaheen is currently running for the seat held by fourth-term Democrat Chris Pappas. Chris Pappas is campaigning to take over Elder Shaheen, the first woman in US history, being elected both as governor and as US senator.
Speaking at a policy event held in Concord, New Hampshire on October 22, 2024, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking re-election in 2026.
The 78-year-old senator announced in March that he would not seek reelection to the Senate in 2026.
The move by young Shaheen, who previously served on the Portsmouth City Council and the Portsmouth Police Commission, set up a blockbuster primary with Maura Sullivan, the vice-chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party. Sullivan is also a Marine veteran who served in the Iraq War and was the 2018 Democrats’ major runner-up to Papas in District 1.
Sullivan launched a council campaign last month.

The First District of New Hampshire covers the eastern half of New England’s only battlefield nations and includes the cities of Manchester and Portsmouth, and was once one of the country’s swing parliamentary districts.
Republicans are looking to turn their seats upside down in next year’s midterm elections, and the race is likely to be competitive and expensive. However, since 2014, Republicans have not beaten the district.
In the GOP Congress nomination race, Chris Bright, a facility management executive who failed for a seat in 2024, declared his candidacy.

So are New Hampshire’s Vice-Chairs of GOP Holly Noveltsky and Joe Kelly Levasser. State Attorney General John Formera is considered a candidate for the GOP nomination.
