Venus could potentially hide a potential “city killer” asteroid, researchers say

According to some researchers, Venus could hide a devastating asteroid when it hits Earth.

A new study published in the Journal Astronomy and Astrophysics shows that Venus has at least 20 adversarial asteroids, potentially allowing it to approach Earth.

The study was led by Valerio Carba from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. In it, researchers said that some asteroids could pose a risk of impact on Earth. There are reportedly many asteroids that could approach or attack our planet, along with what is considered a potential “city killer.”

Some asteroids are “undetected”: Research

The study also showed that these asteroids could be difficult to find. There are asteroids that scientists have yet to recognize.

“In the inner solar system, there are still undetected asteroids in the inner solar system, which can cause serious damage to the Earth,” the expert said.

“A survey like a survey” [Vera] Rubin Observatory may be able to detect some of these asteroids in the near future. We believe that only dedicated observation campaigns from space-based missions near Venus can map and discover all of the “invisible” PHAs. [potentially hazardous asteroids] Among Venus’ cooperative orbital asteroids, the researchers continued.

The Daily Galaxy reports that the Vera Rubin Observatory is scheduled to begin full operation in July. Observatory can make it easier to spot potentially dangerous asteroids, but in the location of the sun, the time to do so is limited.

There is a slight chance that the 2024 YR4 will hit the Earth. scientist

NASA first discovered the 2024 YR4, a 174-220-foot asteroid in December, but there was only about a 1% chance of affecting Earth in 2032. Researchers say the asteroid is the size of a 10-storey building.

“In the unlikely event of the 2024 YR4 in impact orbit, the impact will occur somewhere along the risk corridors that span the East Pacific, South America, Atlantic, Africa, the Arabian Sea and South Asia,” the Jet Propulsion Institute said in a January announcement.

This image was made available by the University of Hawaii’s Asteroid Impact Alert System. December 27, 2024, showing movement of the asteroid 2024 YR4 for about an hour (via ATLAS/University of Hawaii/NASA)

By February, NASA downgraded the YR4’s chance of conflict with Earth to 0.004, saying it would not pose a “significant threat” in 2032.

As of April 2, 2025, the likelihood that the 2024 YR4 would hit the moon on December 22, 2024 rose to 3.8% from 1.7% in late February. But if that had an impact, scientists say they wouldn’t change the moon’s trajectory.
