A statement released Saturday by her spokesperson said that stage, film and television productions ranging from Shakespeare to the hit 1990s series Northern Exposure died at the age of 71 after a fight against cancer.
Mahafey passed away Friday in Los Angeles, according to spokesman Gillian Roscoe.
“I lost the love of my life, America lost one of the most adorable actresses. She’ll be overlooked,” her actor Joseph Kell said in a statement. Survivors include her daughter Alice Richards.

Mahaffey’s stage, film and television productions included the soap opera “The Doctors” more than 45 years ago, covering roles in the television series “Young Sheldon” and “Desperate Housewives.” She starred in the film Surry with Clint Eastwood’s director Tom Hanks, and played Madame Raynard in “The Exit of France” with Michelle Pfeiffer.
She won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her drama series about Hypochondria Eve in “Northern Exposure.” Mahaffey also appeared on television in “The Powers that Be,” “Big Sky,” “Seinfeld,” “Wings,” and “ER.” Her film credits include “Jungle 2 Jungle,” “Senior Trip,” and “Sebiscuit.”
As a child, Mahafey lived in Indonesia, Nigeria, the UK and Texas.
