John Brenkas, co-creator and host of the Emmy Award-winning “Sports Science” show, passed away on Saturday at the age of 54 after a battle with depression.
Brinx. TV, a media company founded by Brenkus, shared the news on Sunday.
“It is a deep sadness to share the news that John Brenkas has passed away,” the company’s statement read.
“John, the founder of Brinx.TV, co-creator of six-time Emmy Award-winning “Sports Science” and co-founder of host Base Productions, was battling depression.
Brenkus’ Sports Science debuted on Fox Sports Net in 2007, exploring sports questions through a scientific lens. The show moved to ESPN a few years later, and the network eventually bought the show from Brenkas.
Brenkas shared in a 2023 interview with Brinks’ Marcellus Wylie. The TV collaborator and partial owner, who was close to taking his own life after he had a rope around his neck and sold “sports science” to ESPN, but was saved by his dog, Zeppelin.
Wiley was among the people in the sports media landscape who paid tribute to Brenkas after his death.
In a homage from ESPN, Brenkas was described as “an innovator, entertainer, educator.”
