With just under three weeks until the country’s most populous city’s major day, New York City’s mayoral race is intensifying.
The nine Democrats running for mayor in a Democrat-controlled city will begin early voting on June 14th, the first debate of the two debates ahead of the June 24 primary.
And perhaps in the political crosshair of the first direct conflict between candidates, the voting frontrunner, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.
The former three-term governor, who resigned in 2021 amid multiple scandals, is seeking political redemption while he works to stop his campaign comeback.

Cuomo has been fighting for the past four years to clear his name after 11 sexual harassment accusations (he repeatedly denied). He was also under investigation to handle the Covid-19 pandemic amid allegations that his administration has kept a modest and modest COVID-related death in state nursing homes.

But thanks to his near-universal recognition of the name among New Yorkers, Cuomo was topped with a mayoral poll, even before he announced his candidacy on March 1st.
Cuomo, who has won his lead in both polls and fundraising, could be the highest target in the debate stage, as he has zero harassment allegations and nursing home handling during the pandemic.

While all Cuomo’s rivals on stage are likely to pile up, expect Queens’ state legislative member Zoran Mamdani to go toe toe with the former governor. Mamdani, a democratic socialist originally from Ugandan, has risen in polls and is now Cuomo’s second in the latest survey.
Also on the stage are city council chairperson Adrian Adams, city director Brad Lander, former city director Scott Stringer, former state legislator Michael Blake, Brooklyn state Sen. Zelner Miley, Queens Sen. Jessica Ramos, and former hedge fund Sen. Whiteney Tilson.

What’s missing on the stage Wednesday night in a discussion hosted by the city’s Campaign Finance Committee is tormented by incumbent mayor Eric Adams.
As his poll numbers plummeted, Adams announced he would run for reelection as an independent candidate in early April.

The Democratic mayoral primary winner will be considered an overwhelming favourite to win the November general election in the Blue City.

The debate comes in a report confirmed by Fox News that the Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into Cuomo after Republicans accused Congress of lying to him about decisions he made as governor during the coronavirus pandemic.
Cuomo’s push to investigate comes after the Justice Department made an unusual decision earlier this year to dismiss charges against Adams for corruption charges.
