House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters that he was “shocked” by Elon Musk’s criticism of the “big and beautiful bill” after the two discussed the law.
The speaker expressed confidence in the bill, but he admitted that it would “for decades” until Congress reached the point where it sneaked in over $36.2 trillion, and that multiple bills were needed to correct the situation.

Elon Musk warns that excessive spending will “stroke us into debt slavery.”
Republican House leaders said he and Musk, who consider him “friends” to him, had a “great conversation” about the “big, beautiful bill” on Monday. The tech billionaire seemed to have joked that the bill could not be “big and beautiful,” and Johnson replied, “Yes, my friend. So beautiful.”
“Elon and I left a great note. We were texting each other – you know, happy text,” Johnson told reporters. The speaker added that he was surprised the next day when Musk opposed the bill.
“I think he’s wrong with flat,” Johnson said. “I think he’s far away from this and I told him a lot.”
Johnson also praised the “clearly great” tech billionaire for his work with Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce government waste.

GOP Senators expresses “concerns” and “scepticism” about Trump’s spending bill after Musk’s rant
Last week, despite appearing to end his tenure at the Trump White House on good terms, Musk swayed with a “big beautiful bill” and called it “nasty hatred.”
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a nasty hatred. I’m embarrassed by those who voted for it. I know you were wrong. You know that,” Musk tweeted.
Musk also retweeted multiple pleas from Senator Mike Lee to improve the Senate and avoid adding Americans to the government spending.
During weekly press conferences on Wednesday, House Republican leaders said they need to defend the “big beautiful bill” and fund the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Multiple leaders, including Johnson and House majority leader Rep. Steve Scullies, R-La. but cited anti-Semitic attacks in Colorado carried out by illegal immigrants as a reason for the bill’s need for funding.

“We need to find another Soliman and get out of America,” Johnson said, referring to suspect Boulder in Boulder, Colorado, attacker Mohamed Soliman, and attacker Mohamed Soliman, who was accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at a group of people seeking hostage releases in Gaza.
With the bill passing the House, it will be up to Senate Republicans to meet President Donald Trump’s July 4 deadline.
