Earlier this year, the city of Carson made the use, sale and emissions of fireworks within its community illegal, but it appears that the new policy hasn’t stopped people from doing their own firework shows.
The ordinance passed by the city council in March ensures that fireworks operators must be featured on a permit for public display of fireworks. These include line firemen designated as “safe and sane”, smoke bombs and fireworks.
Those who do not own a permit could face a fine and perhaps a misdemeanor conviction. The fines are $2,000 for the first offense, $3,000 for the second offense (within a year of the first offense), and $5,000 for each additional offense that follows.
All fines will increase by 10% if not paid or appealed within 15 days of the date being issued. Any unpaid fines earn 10% interest annually.

These penalties are part of the “You Light It, We Citation It” campaign and do not appear to stop some residents from lighting them from the fireworks.
A video recently filmed and shared with the KTLA shows an elaborate fireworks display in the neighborhood. According to one woman, fireworks are “intrusive.”
“[The fireworks have] It’s very loud… They shake their houses and they wake up and scare the kids,” said one resident Leah Flores. We’ve been here for 5 years and have experienced this many times. ”

Local residents told KTLA they believe local businesses are renting out parking spaces in the warehouse. These businesses don’t have the issue of paying fines, residents say.
And city officials say penalties have been increased to protect people and animals that could be hurt by the big explosion, but neighbors say they don’t have enough enforcement.

“It can last up to 10 or 30 minutes,” said Joan, another Carson resident. “I’m asking my husband to call 911 because I don’t think it’s going to stop.”
“It’s not right, especially at night,” she continued. “Cities need to do something about it.”
Carson residents are reminded that they can anonymously report fireworks activities to the city’s public safety department. However, on the 4th of July, complaints could continue to pile up as the night sky lights up due to illegal firework displays.
