The Huntington Beach family caught a once-in-a-lifetime video after lightning was dangerously close to two neighboring children.
Penelope Buckner stars in the video as she and her brothers praise the sounds of thunder from Tuesday’s storm. Seconds after the video, Lightning bumps into a palm tree near the family home, bringing the kids back inside.
Thankfully, no injuries occurred.
“It was amazing, but I was a little scared,” the girl said.
Penelope’s mother, Tiffany Buckner, recorded the video and said no one thought lightning would be hit nearby. Tiffany, a native of the Midwest, said she was used to the storm, but she had never seen much in her five years living in Huntington Beach.
“I wasn’t scared of lightning. Honestly, it was a loud noise that scared me,” she said.
Before the strike, Tiffany said her family thought the storm was even further apart.
“We were counting the seconds between lightning and thunder, everything was far away,” she said.
Keith Fallsrop lives in the house where lightning strikes. It hit a palm tree in his front yard.
“I shook my house loudly,” he said. “Like an earthquake, a bit.”
His daughter, Arena, reflected those thoughts.
“We felt like the whole house was shaking,” she said. “It was crazy.”
The impact was so strong that I split one tree into the center, causing serious damage to another tree.
“Both trees caught fire for a minute, but it was raining again, so the rain put it out quickly,” Keith said.
The National Weather Service urges its citizens to immediately move to a safe shelter the moment they hear lightning. If the Thunder is heard, it warns that the lightning bolt is close enough to strike.
