Authorities said the man carjacked a bucket truck for the LA County Sheriff’s department early Wednesday morning, but the sheriff’s aide said he was unstable on the ground.
The suspect made the hostile acquisition of the 2011 Whiteford F550 utility bucket truck at the corner of Spring Street and Temple Street at 5:40 a.m., with two deputies on the vehicle, according to a department’s breaking news. Authorities are currently searching for suspects and stolen vehicles.
The bucket truck, also known as a cherry picker, is an expandable arm that ends with a vehicle with a hydraulic lift system and a bucket that allows people to stand on. It is used to lift workers into areas that are difficult to reach.
Two undercover agents were using trucks to remove hidden cameras, when a man in his 20s believed he had to go to the hospital and began driving, law enforcement told The Times.
When the carjack was carried out, one of the agents was stopped with a bucket.
Another aide, sitting in the passenger area, noticed that his colleague was in danger, and he was able to lower the bucket to the ground, allowing his partner to jump off the truck. Law enforcement sources say the second lieutenant also jumped out of the truck.
The sheriff’s department is looking for a stolen truck and suspect. The suspect is called a black man, 6 feet, 2 inches tall, 180 pounds, shaved head. According to the department’s bulletin, he was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans at the end.
