Their political future is uncertain, Newsom and Harris are on their way to Compton to feed their young dreams

While the two most well-known Democrats in California remain mothers about plans for the future, former vice president Kamala Harris and Gov. Gavin Newsom both spent time on Compton’s political persona on Thursday, attending another incident at a local school.

As hundreds of graduates crossed the stage in blue and white Regalia at Compton High School earlier that morning, many stopped to shake their hands at Days to take a selfie in honor.

Hours later, Newsom read to young students at Clinton Elementary School in Compton, then stood with local leaders in front of a cheerful cartoon mural to launch a new state literacy plan. This issue was one of the most important things to the governor, and his educational background was often defined by his dyslexia.

The adjacent appearance that occurred a few miles away was “accidental,” Newsom said. But they come at a moment when both high octane Democrats are in some kind of political range.

The pair are considered presidential candidates for 2028, but the California political world is waiting at Tenterhook to see if Harris will enter California’s 2026 governor race. Harris is expected to make a decision by summer, and her entrance will overturn an already crowded race.

Just 19 months into his second final semester, Governor Lambdak is in a hurry to solidify his governor’s legacy, while also establishing himself as a practical leader who can drive his Nationalist Party out of the wilderness. Meanwhile, Harris has to decide whether he wants to manage a really well-known, unwieldy situation, and, if so, whether California voters feel the same.

Both Harris and Newsom were significantly absent at the party convention last weekend as thousands of party representatives, activists, donors and Labour leaders were convened in Anaheim.

Newsom was a well-known loyal representative to then-President Biden. However, in recent months with his “This Is Gavin Newsom” podcast and a long list of democratic Vietnoir guests, the governor has worked to publicly distinguish his own brand from his own brand, one controversial interview at a time.

Meanwhile, Newsom, who previously scoffed speculation and said he hadn’t considered a bid for the White House despite his manifesto ambitions, is more openly acknowledging that he could take up the top job of the country in the future.

“I might do that,” Newsom said in an interview last month. “I don’t know, but I have to burn that reason, and I need to have a compelling vision that distinguishes myself from others.

Newsom got in the way Thursday when asked if Harris thought he would run for governor.

“Look, I’m going to be very careful here because I had someone right behind me running for the governor,” laughed Newsom as California Saputo. A smile behind Tony Thurmond’s public guidance, who announced his 2026 governor bid in September 2023, smiled behind him.

Harris attended Compton High graduation at the invitation of Myshay Cassy, a student-athlete and graduated senior student-athlete student board member. She received her honorary diploma, but she did not speak at the ceremony.

Staff writer Taryn Luna contributed to this report.
