The senior students who graduated from Compton High School were expected to attend most colleges next year, which was a surprise for VIP. Former Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to the class of 2025 at the opening ceremony.
The district said 87% of Compton High’s 283 alumni are accepted into four- or two-year universities, including UCLA and UC Berkeley. The graduation class also received a scholarship of approximately $500,000.
According to Myshay Causey, a senior alumni who contributed to the invitation to Harris, the former vice president is looking forward to Sakura for the alumni, with the former vice president as a special guest.
On his way to Cornell University, Maishay said he met former gentleman Doug Emov while working part-time at a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles.
While Emov was having dinner, Maishay said he would write an essay, explaining some of the things she and fellow students do at Compton High School, and explaining what she did in the student leadership role.
“As my own black woman, I admire the way she portrayed herself,” the teen said.
After Myshay asked Emhoff to hand over the notes to his wife, she received a call from the vice president, asking everything from the leadership, saying that Myshay had spoken about Compton Unified School District, a student board member.
“I went to the school board where I would meet on the exact same day and recalled, ‘Hey guys, I got off the phone with Kamala Harris. What can I invite her to?’ And they immediately told me ‘graduation’,” recalled Maisha.
The student said that it felt special to know who has accomplished someone, just as Kamala Harris cared about her and her fellow classmates.
“I’m so happy to see where this leads to and what this leads to,” MyShay said.
