United Nations California, Service Employees (SEIU) issued a statement Friday that union president David Fuerta was taken into custody during an ice raid in Los Angeles.

The union is seeking the release of Huerta, who said he was injured while working at a federal agency. Fuerta was released from the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries but remains in custody.

“What happened to me isn’t about me. This is much bigger. It’s about us as a community standing together and resisting the injustice that is happening. Hardworking people and our families and members of our community are treated like criminals. We all need to stand against this insanity.

Mayor Karen Bass confirmed with NBC4 that the union president was in ice custody and he was also pepper sprayed.

“He’s physically fine, but I know that what really affected him was the emotional trauma of seeing his parents and children isolated,” Bass said. “He’s in ice custody and hopes to get him out soon.”

According to Bass, it is unclear why Huerta is in custody.

“We are proud of President Fuerta’s participation in justice as a community observer, in line with his long history of advocating for migrant workers and the highest values of our movement. We stand up against injustice, regardless of the individual’s risks or the power of those who commit it,” Seiu wrote in a statement.

Bass said she was working on coordinating meetings with groups working with the immigrant population on Monday, discussing plans for these types of situations.

Federal agents were running a legal judicial warrant at ALA’s workplace this morning when David Fuerta intentionally blocked the vehicle and obstructed access. He was arrested for obstructing federal officers and will face arrest in federal court on Monday. Let me… pic.twitter.com/gifd34licf

“My message to them is that when they come here, I’m going to fight for all Angelenos, whether they have paperwork or not,” Bass said. “We are an immigrant city, and this will affect hundreds of thousands of Angeleno.”

About 45 people were arrested in Operation Sting on Friday, according to HSI officials.

“Today, alongside our partner law enforcement, Ice Officers and agents executed four federal search warrants at three locations in central Los Angeles. Approximately 44 people were arrested administratively and one arrest was prevented.
